Unity Spin – A Tree Planting Ceremony April 13, 2009

The big wedding season is right around the corner.  Most summer wedding couples are putting the finishing touches on all parts of the wedding day, including the ceremony.  Looking for something  different and unique to symbolize the joining  of two lives into one, or two families joining together on this special day?  Enter the “green” version of a unity ceremony – the tree planting ceremony.  Here is one variation “How-To” performed by a long time family friend at her wedding ceremony.

1)      Set up at the altar to include potted tree (often taken from a special place, whether it be a parents home or a location special to the couple), two small buckets of dirt (each can be collected at the bride and groom’s respective homes or  from each set of parents’ homes), and two  gardening trowels .  A small watering can be placed up front  if desired as well.

2)      Upon the mother’s entrance, each mother approaches the front and scoops in a small amount of dirt from their small bucket before returning to their seat

3)      During a specific song or reading, the bride and groom each add the remainder of the dirt to the large potted tree.  The couple can water the plant together as well at this point.

4)      After the ceremony, take the potted plant, and transplant it at the newlywed’s home to symbolize putting down roots and longevity and strength within this marriage!

Dozens of variations on this tree planting ceremony can be made to suite the couple, the ceremony and the meaning behind this special ceremony, but no matter what, it’s a great way to have a “keepsake” from your marriage ceremony that will  last a lifetime with you two!

Thank you Liz for the photos!
EDIT (08/2012)  – I have gotten hundreds of requests for scripts or readings used during the Tree Planting Ceremony – so here is a LINK to a few examples I came across along the way.  I hope that gets you all started!

Happy planning!

Great and helpful suggestions! We have decided to do a tree planting ceremony as well. Our wedding bands are made of Hawaiian Koa and Maple woods. My husband is a wood worker, and we are also having an outdoor wedding in the country with forest as the backdrop. I would really appreciate some suggestions for type of tree as well as a reading for the ceremony. Thanks so much!

I am planning on the tree planting ceremony as opposed to a candle lighting. I would also be interested in a script to be read or song suggestions. I love this idea and think more and more brides will chose to have this aas part of their special day. thank you in advance for any advice you can offer!

  15. Robin Says:

I haven’t seen a response to the people who asked for the script, but would like one if you have one.

  16. I know everyonw has been asking about the script…i too am curious as to the wording. Is there a biblical verse that goes along with this as well? But my biggest question is what type of tree do you use? I’m not much of a grdern, and it would be awful for my tree to wither away, not the best metaphor for marriage! Thanks!

  17. I know everyone keeps writting you asking for the script. I was curious as to the wording as well? Is there a scripture that goes along with it? And, does it matter what kind of tree it is? I’m not much of a planter but am curious as to which trees would actually fight hard. That would be awful to plant your tree and it wither away. Not the best metaphor haha, but thanks!
